Something short for today from Martin Luther via Rodney Clapp, reminding us, especially us who are Baptists, that baptism is not just a testimony of faith.
We are not to base baptism on a ground as slippery, brittle, and often confused as our own faith. Martin Luther is clear. “If I am baptized on God’s bidding I know for certain that I am baptized. Were I to be baptized merely on my own faith, I might tomorrow find myself unbaptized, if faith failed me, or I became worried that I might not yesterday have had the faith rightly.”
Rodney Clapp, Tortured Wonders: Christianity Spirituality for People, Not Angels (Brazos, 2004), p.108.
