I think I agree with Gunton that any suffering (on/by?) God would have to come from within God's self and not imposed upon him... the 'emotional' suffering here is probably a helpful idea.

I have problems with the 'impassibility' idea of God too, because I think it makes God too distant from his creation. God is relational: he is communion. If we are to have a communion with God, and we suffer, I think in some sense God will be affected by that, in the same way that I am affected if my friends or family suffer.

Seeing this as an emotional suffering- from empathy, perhaps- proceeding from God's self, rather than a suffering that is 'inflicted' upon God by some other agent...
I think this helps to pose a solution to the issue...
