I discovered today that John Macquarrie, former Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity, Oxford (1970-1986) died on Monday (28 May). An outstanding theologian of his generation. He was the author of The Principles of Christian Theology (1966, 2003 [Rev Ed]), God-Talk (1967), Twentieth-Century Religious Thought (1963, 2001 [5th ed.], Jesus Christ in Modern Thought (1990, 2003 [Rev 2nd Ed.]). He was a Gifford Lecturer and also gave the Hensley Henson lectures (1993-1994) . He taught at Union Theological Seminary, New York (1962-1970). He was a leading critic of the book and theology of The Myth of God Incarnate (1977). He was given a Festschrift in 1986 and more recently in 2006 (In Search of Deity and Humanity).
